Q: I’ve been taking 2 regular OmegaVia per day. If I switch to EPA 500, how many pills would I have to take?
A: You would have to double the number of pill. Since EPA 500 is a much smaller pill, it contains about half the Omega-3 as regular OmegaVia. So if you were taking 2 regular OmegaVia, you would need 4 of the EPA 500 pills. EPA 500 pills are much smaller, so most people can swallow a few at a time.

Q: Why would I take EPA 500 instead of regular OmegaVia? Or do I need to take both?
A: No reason to take both.

The purpose of EPA 500 is that it does not have DHA.

EPA 500 does not have DHA. Some people prefer the unique benefits of EPA over DHA.*

Research suggests that improving omega-3 fat intake from a concentrated source may help support a healthy mood. Some, but not all studies, indicate that 2,000 mg of omega-3 fats daily with a higher concentration of EPA may offer benefit. *

Q: I’m pregnant. Can I take EPA 500?
A: Yes, you may take EPA 500 if you are pregnant. However, both your body and your growing baby need DHA for proper development. You will need to add a separate DHA supplement in addition to EPA 500. EPA 500 does not have any DHA.*

Q: What types of fish do you use?
A: OmegaVia EPA uses Sardine, Mackerel, and Anchovy.

Q: Is it enteric coated?

Q: How many pills should I take?

Some, but not all studies, indicate that 2,000 mg of omega-3 fats daily with a higher concentration of EPA may offer benefit.

Q: When should I take OmegaVia  EPA 500?
A: OmegaVia EPA 500 is best taken with or just before a meal.

Q: Can I take more than one capsule at once?
A: Yes. You may take 2 to 4 capsules at once. However, if you have not taken Omega-3 before, it is best to start with one capsule at a time to see how your body reacts.

If you are already on blood-thinning medication, please consult your physician before taking this product.

Q: How should I store the product?
A: Store at room temperature in a cool, dry place. Refrigeration is not necessary. However, if you are going to store the product for several months, it is best to keep it refrigerated or frozen.

Q: How long is the product good for?
A: Check the side of the package for expiration date. Shelf-life is generally 3 years from date of manufacture. OmegaVia contains anti-oxidants that increase the life of the product. If you freeze OmegaVia, you can extend the shelf life by an additional two to three years.

Q: Is it IFOS tested and 5-star certified?
A: Yes, all lots of OmegaVia are tested at IFOS. We also double-check IFOS results against our own internal test results at an FDA-audited third testing facility in California. All data, including Omega-3 and mercury content are tested three times after the oil has been put into the capsule. We also test for purity and cleanliness before the oil is encapsulated.

Q: Is OmegaVia mercury-free?
A: a purification process called molecular distillation followed by Heat-free Supercritical CO2 Extraction (SCE) Technology is used to remove mercury and other contaminants. Also, the form of mercury found in seafood (methyl mercury) is soluble only in water and not oil. So, if mercury is present in fish, most of it is partitioned into the flesh/meat or fish meal, and not the oil. OmegaVia is certified by a neutral third party testing lab to fully disclose mercury levels.

Q: Is there cholesterol in OmegaVia?
A: The oil used in OmegaVia EPA 500 is highly purified, virtually all traces of cholesterol are removed.

Less concentrated forms of fish oil, such as “retail grade” may contain cholesterol.

Q: How is the fish oil processed?
A: The fish oil used to make OmegaVia EPA 500 goes through a flash molecular distillation, followed by heat-free CO2 Supercritical Extraction and finally heat-free CO2 Chromatography.

Unlike all other fish oil purification technologies, this is a heat-free process.

Many of these steps are patented because of the unique scientific methods developed to produce the purest fish oil.

Q: Can I take fish oil supplements while on an anti-coagulant?
A: If you are taking a blood thinner or anti-coagulant like Coumadin, please talk to your doctor before taking fish oil supplements.

Please talk to your doctor and monitor your clotting times if you are taking both an anti-coagulant and a fish oil supplement.

Q: Can fish oil supplements be taken with other supplements?
A: Yes, fish oil can be taken with all supplements. Fish oil is well tolerated and Omega-3 are “good fats” that everyone needs and which should be a natural part of a healthy diet.

Q: I am allergic to soy. Is it OK to take OmegaVia EPA 500?
A: OmegaVia EPA 500 is soy-free.

A: No, this product is gluten free.

Q: Does OmegaVia EPA 500 contain GMO ingredients?

  1. Please cancel my Omega Via auto ship as I will now start using the Omegavia 500 on auto ship. I am using this pill because I have a high triglycerides . Thank you for your help in this matter. Roxane Morgan

    • Hi Roxane – our customer service team is aware of your request and will take care of the product switch. Thank you for choosing OmegaVia.

  2. Hi …I have been taking Omega Via for the past 6 months. My triglycerides and cholesterol levels are normal, however my good cholesterol is not what is should be. I do suffer from anxiety (people say I interrupt others while talking). I take 3 omega via each day. Please advice whether to switch for Omega Via EPA500 instead – thanks in advance!

    • Hi Amsher – ‘good cholesterol’ or HDL can only be modified by increasing exercise and the fat content of your diet. For mood issues, EPA 500 is generally better. You’d have to try it and see which works better for you.

  4. I do not know where you are getting your info that dha is not as good for as epa. I have heard quite the contrary. I have been taking 565 mg dha, 435 epa for 3 months now and my inflammation has been almost completely alleviated. All info that I have read recently has said to select products with more dha than epa, except yours. Please explain.

    • Hi Tom – DHA is important. Very important. The brain is mostly fat and DHA is most of that.

If you’re pregnant, nursing, a child, or have recently suffered a stroke or brain injury, you need very high levels of DHA.

But EPA is crucial too. These two fatty acids perform complimentary functions in the body. In some cases, like depression and mood related issues, they compete or counteract each other. See this: http://www.omegavia.com/why-omegavia-is-high-in-epa-mood-benefits/ In these instances, you are far better of having more EPA than DHA.

DHA is extremely important for the brain. However, the brain hangs onto every milligram of DHA for years, so you only need about 3 or 4 mg of DHA per day for the brain. With DHA a little bit goes a long way. More here: http://www.omegavia.com/why-omegavia-is-high-in-epa-omega-3-dha-and-your-brain/

If you are unlucky to have extremely high triglycerides (> 500), taking high doses of DHA can increase your LDL levels. This concerns some people. More here: http://www.omegavia.com/why-omegavia-is-high-in-epa-omega-3-ldl/

I am not at all surprised that you noticed a decrease in inflammation with your formula. That’s how Omega-3 works. DHA reduces inflammation in slightly different ways than EPA, but both reduce inflammation. EPA, however, is unique in that is directly competes with Arachidonic Acid (AA), which is the precursor for a LOT of different pro-inflammatory molecules. Most over-the-counter work by targeting these same molecules. DHA cannot do this due to its molecular structure. More here: http://www.omegavia.com/why-omegavia-is-high-in-epa-omega-3-part-1/

Having said all that, I would urge you to be cautious about anyone or any company that says you ONLY NEED either DHA or EPA. You need both. But depending on your health and stage in life, your needs for EPA or DHA may vary. Please read the links above – they will answer a lot of your questions. You will also note that all claims are backed up by published scientific papers, including the fact that you need DHA on a daily basis.

      Hope this helps.

  8. Hello, I have lupus and have been taking Omegavia EPA 500, two twice per day. This definitely helps my mood and may help my inflammation — this is less noticeable. I have been reading the FAQs regarding brain health and DHA. The lupus causes me cognitive dysfunction, and I have some white matter hyperintensies on my brain MRI. Do you think it might be more helpful for me to take Omegavia? I do occasionally eat salmon. Thanks for your thoughtful answers to our questions.

    • Hi Ernestine – if you eat salmon once or twice a week, you should have all the DHA that you need. Remember that DHA in your brain stays there for over 2 years: http://www.omegavia.com/why-omegavia-is-high-in-epa-omega-3-dha-and-your-brain/

DHA is stored and kept in the body for long periods. EPA on the other hand is something that you need to replenish very frequently. If you don’t eat salmon once or twice a week, you may want to consider taking a regular OmegaVia on an occasional basis to top up your DHA needs.

    • Hi Jim – regular OmegaVia is probably better for memory because it has nearly 300 mg of DHA as well as lots of EPA. There is some evidence that DHA helps with memory. I’d also look into Cognizin brand Citicoline and Magnesium Theronate.

    • Hi Vincent – this is normal. There are some minor lipid components and antioxidant tocopherols that may sometimes appear as particulates.

  10. Hi,

Came across this omega3 that seems to say that it is the ‘fountain of youth’ that can boost your telemere. Would like your opinion on this.

I also remember you saying that EPA is more important for normal adults (not pregnant and no brain trauma). This article seems to say the opposite.

    • Hi Ken – I deleted the link because that looked like a scam to me. All Omega-3 help with telomeres. There is nothing special about that link you sent. I stand by my statements about the importance of both EPA and DHA. Your need for each changes with age and your health condition, but you always need both.

  12. Hello Vin,
I started taking the Omega Via EPA 500 about 10 weeks ago to get some help with my depression. Started with two pills twice daily (4 total/day) with a meal but recently (last two weeks) experimented with upping my dose to three pills twice daily (6 total/day) with a meal and found that this dosage is helping better not only with my moods but my chronic fatigue and body soreness. So far I have no ill effects from the pills best I can tell. I’ve had depression for many years and have gone through menopause too. Any problems you know of with taking a high dose of the EPA 500 pills?

    • Hi Connie – we tell people to keep the dosage to no more than 8 per day. So you should be OK with 6 per day. If 6 helped more than 4, then that tells me that you may have an inflammation problem that the EPA is helping with inflammation. A lot of dietary and lifestyle choices drive inflammation and that’s what you should be targeting with the help of a functional medicine MD and a qualified dietitian. In the meantime, you could add other anti-inflammatory supplements like Curcumin or probiotics that help mood. Our sister company makes some of these products and are available on Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Absorption-InnovixLabs-Award-Winning-BioPerine-extracts/dp/B00L775W3U
