Comfort Your Joints with Omega-3

We hear this all the time:

“My doctor told me to start taking fish oil. I thought it was for my heart. Not only did my heart condition improve but my joints have never felt better. So I’ll continue taking it.”

Omega-3 can:

  • Help soothe joint tenderness*
  • Help reduces enzymes that harm cartilage*
  • Help increases grip strength*
  • Enhances walking pace*

Science Corner

Omega-3 reduces the amount of Arachidonic Acid available for Eicosanoids – Prostaglandins and Leukotrienes and cytokines Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha, Interleukin-1 and Interleukin-6. This means less joint irritating compounds.

Eating more Omega-6 than Omega-3 causes reverses that effect.

Omega-6 fats are found in corn, sunflower, canola, soybean and cottonseed oil and are found in many snacks, processed foods, fried foods and margarine.

The grocery store snack aisle is full of Omega-6.

Yes, Omega-6 are essential, but too much of a good thing leads to joint discomfort.

Fortunately, Omega-3 from fish oil is a natural soothing agent that reduces joint irritating compounds. Especially, the EPA Omega-3.

10,000 Times Stronger

Scientists have shown that Omega-3 helps support joint comfort. But they are just beginning to understand how this happens.

Dr. Charles Serhan of Harvard Medical School reports that the body converts Omega-3 into joint-protective compounds 10,000 times stronger than the original Omega-3. These newly discovered compounds are called Resolvins. Resolvins work by naturally slowing or stopping the production and transport of pain-causing chemicals to your joints.

Minor Diet Changes Make a BIG Difference

Taking fish oil supplements is not the only answer. You will need a diet makeover:

  • Less sugars, less starches and less wheat (yes, less of even “healthy” whole grain wheat!)
  • Completely cut out vegetable oils made from corn, soy, sunflower and safflower. Use olive or coconut oils instead.

And importantly, talk to your doctor about any discomfort in your joints.

What About Glucosamine and Chondroitin?

Glucosamine and Chondroitin are popular arthritis and joint care supplements. They both have been clinically proven to help rebuild worn out joint tissue. But they don’t reduce pain quickly because they don’t reduce inflammation. Rebuilding cartilage is very important, so for best effect, take Glucosamine and Chondroitin with Omega-3.

  1. Let me know how many capsules of FISH OIL for osteoarthritis pains daily?
Let me know where OMEGAVIA available in Mumbai, India in which chemist shop?

    • Hi ADI – 2000 mg of Omega-3 per day will help with osteoarthritis related inflammation. Note that I said 2000 mg of Omega-3, not 2000 mg of fish oil! They are different!

And, no, OmegaVia is not currently available for sale in Mumbai.

  2. Hello Mr Kutty,
Thanks for replying to my qsn on the other thread on Prograde Azantis Krill Oil. It’s commendable how you give your opinion without pushing for Omegavia. Really.
    A few more qsns.
    1) You did mention that “1000 mg of Omega-3 from krill equals 1600 mg of Omega-3 from fish oil”. Omegavia has @ 1200 mg of Omega3 from Fish oil. Just curious why you haven’t packed in Omega3 from Krill oil in here.
    2) Are there any studies that show the rate of absorption of these Omega3 in a normal human body. i.e. how much % of 1200 mg does get absorbed by the body ? I don’t see Phospholipids in Omegavia to boost absorption or is that the “Other Omega3” on the label ?
    3) Does taking this pill with hot OR cold water make any difference to it’s enteric coating & hence it’s absorption ?
    4) you also suggested Glucosamine & Chondroitin can be taken as supplements alongside Omegavia. Can you suggest any specific brand for this that you might have tried/tested for joint care too ?

All your sugegstions are really appreciated.
    Thanks,
    NIkhil.

    • Hi Nikhil – if we were to add krill oil to our formula, that would take ‘room’ in the capsule that we could use to cram more Omega-3 into. We’re not opposed to the idea – we’ve considered it. But still think cramming the little space we have in a capsule with fish oil Omega-3 is better for you than adding krill oil to the mix and ending up with less Omega-3…even though that tiny bit of krill oil absorbs a little better. Hope that makes sense.

No phospholipids in OmegaVia. Adding separate phospholipids to fish oil supplements will not increase absorption. It only helps if phospholipids are naturally bound to the Omega-3 like in Krill oil. We have not done absorption studies on OmegaVia because Omega-3 incorporation into cells is fairly well understood. If you want to increase fish oil absorption, take it with a meal that has a generous amount of fat. Simple as that.

Hot/cold water makes no difference. Taking it with a meal does.

There are hundreds of brands of Glucosamine and Choindroitin out there – go for any of the major brands. I have no specific suggestions.

  3. Interesting information on your site. My eye doctor prescribed Restasis and fish oil and flax seed oil for my dry eyes. I found the flax seed oil taken at night was a nightmare for my stomach so I stopped that.

Once I established a good regimen of fish oil I stopped using the Restasis eye drops and I no longer need them at all. If I stop my fish oil for even a weekend, my eyes respond with dryness so I am well-aware of the benefit. I am surprised to find so few references to this aspect of fish oil supplementation. To me, it is a miracle compound! As a side benefit, my HDL/LDL ratio improved and my TG numbers improved and my finger joints don’t ‘crack’ each morning as they used to. I changed nothing else so I am personally convinced it was the fish oil creating all these benefits. Thank you for all the good information here. I just wanted to add my experience with fish oil. (BTW I take 2 Kirkland brand 1200mg, enteric coated pills per day. Each pill claims to have 684mg of Omega-3. It works for me so I am loathe to change but I will consider trying your brand when I am finished with my current supply.)

    • Hi Deb – that’s great to hear. I am not surprised about any of the benefits that you mention. It’s working exactly as it is supposed to.

On a personal note, I helped develop that product for Costco almost a decade ago, when I worked for another company. At that time, it was the best product available. That was a long time ago and things have come a long way since. It’s still a good product and a good value if you want to stick with it.

      Thanks for sharing your experience!

  4. Hello Mr. Kutty,
What is your opinion about the –nutrilite products? I have started taking a few products manufactured by them–Omega3,protien,daily,Glucosamine HCL etc.
    Thanks
    Vicky

    • Hi Vicky – Nutrilite makes good products. Expensive but good. No quality issues to worry about.

      – Vin Kutty

      • Hello mr. kutty,
I have rhuematiod arthritis. How much fish oil do i need to take for the inflammation and i am overweight so if i use a diet plan can i use more omega 3 for that? I purchased a fish oil that says ultra omega 3 and has 1400 mg of fish oil and it says on front 1000 mg of omega 3, but on the side it has ehp 647mg, and the dha is 278mg and 75mg other omega 3 fatty acids. And does it matter if i take 2 a day of this because that would be alot of fish oil, does it matter how much fish oil you can take in a day? How many of these should i take a day? Thanks for the information mr kutty….:)

        • Hi Larry – there is a limited about of research on rheumatoid arthritis and Omega-3. Everything I’ve read says RA requires between 5000 and 7000 mg of Omega-3 per day. That’s higher than what I’m comfortable recommending. I normally say no more than 3000 mg of Omega-3 per day. I’d increase your dosage to 4 of your pills, but I don’t know if that will help.

  5. Hi Vin, I have fibromyalgia and take all sorts of over-the-counter pills. 900mg/dl Gabapentin, 300mg/dlTramadol, 3-4g/dlParaceptamol & 800-1600mg/dlIbuprofen. Omega3 I have only heard of in combination with ADHD. Can you tell me how much Omega3 I can should/take daily, how fast will I feel a difference and which tablets can I reduce (and when). I know I’m addicted to the prescription painkillers, I can feel when I run low (not sure which sort thou) and I am in a lot of pain. Would Glucosamine and Chondroitin make a difference? I’m grateful for any advice
    Ela

    • Hi Ela – these are questions only your doctor can answer. I have no idea if taking Omega-3 will improve your condition beyond what these medications are already doing. I know that taking 1000 to 2000 mg of Omega-3 per day will make you a little healthier. My advice to you is not to take more supplements, but rather start on an immediate and drastic diet makeover. Start on a Whole Foods diet, sometimes called Ancestral diet or Paleo diet. Eat only vegetables, meats, seafood, eggs, nuts and fruits. No sugar or grains. Get a copy of Perfect Health Diet by the Jaminet.

      • Hi Vin, thank you ever so much for your reply.
        I don’t eat many grains, sugar however…… – bad I know,
I will look into the diet, need to shift a little weight anyway, all these pills seems to be gainers.
Again – many thanks for your advice
        Ela

  6. Hello,
I am very happy I found this informative article, but I also need more specific advice in relation to my case.
Last year my doctor told me I have a pre-arthritis disease, whose name I forgot, which as he basically explained could be reversed and normalised or it could get worse and turn into arthritis. So my question is, would taking Omega-3 AND Glucosamine and Chondroitin help reverse this process that has started? or will those supplements simply help for as long as i am taking them and once i stop taking them, the disease keeps evolving and eventually I end up having arthritis either way? Please advice.

Is there any scenario in which taking Omega 3 and Glucosamine and Chondroitin is actually a bad idea for me?

    • Hi Maria – taking Omega-3 with Glucosamine and Chondroitin together is a great idea if you have ‘pre-arthritis’ as your doctor calls it. Will it reverse the process, I don’t know. Take 2000 mg of Omega-3 and 1500 mg of Glucosamine per day. Give it 2-3 months and see if that helps. Glucosamine is very slow acting. If this combination helps improve your condition, then if you stop this regimen, I suspect the benefits will gradually go away if you stop taking these nutrients. Losing some weight, cutting out sugar and reducing Omega-6 fats from your diet will also help.

  7. I would love to see an in-depth series on omega 3 and joints/tendons similar to the 5-part manifesto on depression and omega 3. I’d be particularly interested in anything you can find re: tendonitis.

    Cheers!

    • Hi Evan – thank you for the suggestion. We’d like to do a multi-part blog on inflammation as well. It is a subject that needs more focus and attention.

      • Dear Vin,
I got a joint inflammation, actually taking 550mg (EPA+DHA) fish oil capsule a day. Its pulling down my burning sensation in my knee, but the inflammation (and pain) is still here. The manufacturer OlimpLab Gold Omega says on the box, maximum 1capsule/day, and it also contains 100% of vitamin E. Do you think I can take more of this fish oil? How long can i take fish oil? Did you make a multi part blog on inflammation? I would be happy to learn from you more about this topic..
        Thank you for your help!
        Robbie

        • Hi Robbie – you can take up to 3000 mg of Omega-3 per day according to US FDA. If you’re on a lower dosage, say 1000 mg, then you can take that indefinitely – no need to stop. We don’t have the multi-part articles on inflammation yet. In the meantime, eliminate sugar, grains, and Omega-6-rich seed oils. Start with a good diet – something like Paleo or Zone. Increase sleep. Learn about gut health. Exercise more. Get plenty of sunshine.

  8. Hi Mr. Kutty,

I have psoriatic arthritis since early 20’s and has been taking naproxen for the last 12 years….
I take naproxen dosage 2 pills (2 x 220 mg) only once and sometime after 12 hours 1 more pill….
So I take as needed and NOT on daily basis.
I’m wondering how can your product benefit me?
Thanks for your respond in advance!

    Best,
    Mario

    • Hi Mario – Omega-3 are anti-inflammatory, so that may help. I’m glad you’re not taking naproxen every day – that would not be a good thing due to the gastrointestinal damage associated with everyday use. Let your body recover a little before dosing.

I would start with 2000 mg of Omega-3 per day. Some people find taking it with a baby aspirin helps a lot.

  9. My 8 year old daughter was just diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis and Dr.s are wanting to put her on anti-inflamatory and immuno-suppressants. Would you recommend her try fish oil before taking these prescription medications? If so, in what dosage?

    • Hi Shera – this is a medical question that only your doctors can answer. Having said that, you may want to make a few dietary changes: put her on an anti-inflammatory diet – sugar-free, wheat-free (gluten free), grain-free and dairy free diet for a month. This is basically a Paleo diet. My kids are on it – we cook a lot of recipes from a book called ‘Eat like a Dinosaur.’ Great stuff. You may be surprised at the results. Omega-3 is certainly an anti-inflammatory, so that will help. I’d aim for 1000 to 2000 mg of Omega-3 per day. You may want to try our EPA 500 product that will be released in a couple of weeks on Amazon.com and on this website in about a month. It’s a small pill that an 8 year old can swallow and has 500 mg of anti-inflammatory EPA Omega-3. Check with your doctor to make sure this is OK and don’t avoid or put off prescribed medication.

  10. Is the EPA 500 product yet available? and how is that different than the Omegavia fish oil that you all sell? If I am taking the Omegavia fish oil, why would I need to take the EPA 500?

  11. I just started taking fish oil liquid today for arthritis pain and stiffness. 5ml per day. Approximately how long before I should feel a difference?

    • Hi Annette – assuming you are getting about 2000 mg of Omega-3 per day, I’d give it a week or two to reduce inflammation.

    • Hi Susan – we do not currently offer this product in the Philippines. But you may be able to purchase it from Amazon.com. Thank you for your interest.

  12. I have a possible pinched nerve creating low back pain and extremely bad sciatic nerve pain in my buttocks, thigh, and calf.l. Since inflimation is involved. And i want to eliminate inflimation meds . as a 35 year old man how much. Omega 3 should i take along with any other supplements should i take. And what type of foods should i advoid or slow down eating. Too young for surgery its been a year of this pain and maybe reducing inflamation can give me some relief.

    • Hi Julius – sorry to hear about the ongoing discomfort. I assume you are under good medical care, if not, please get it. You may also benefit from chiropractic, exercise, diet change and some supplements…if these are possible and approved by your doctor. Diet – reduce or eliminate sugar, refined carbs and processed foods – these will increase inflammation. Vegetable seed oils like corn/soy/canola will do the same. Switch to olive oil. Eat a whole foods diet consisting mostly of vegetables, meats, seafood, eggs and some fruits. In addition, take about 2000 mg of Omega-3 and 210 mg of Omega-7 – http://www.amazon.com/Purified-Innovix-Labs-Macadamia-Palmitoleic/dp/B00GRAAMLY/

I don’t think diet and supplements will fix the pinched nerve, but they will help with inflammation that might otherwise be making you unwell.

    • Hi Wayne – OmegaVia will certainly help lower your inflammation. Several factors feed into the condition, so while you may see noticeable benefits with Omega-3, you will have to work with an integrative of functional MD to correct all other possible root causes of the condition.

  13. I have arthritis pain in my knee and lowerback . I am taking supplement called ArthriD which has N-Acetyl-Glucosamine, an all natural derivative of shellfish, do I still have to take Fish Oil Omega-3 ?

      • On the subject of turmeric and fish oil….I’m trying a product from Vital Choice Seafood company that is Curcumin and wild sockeye salmon oil. They specialize in wild salmon and make the oil themselves in Alaska from the heads of the fish they catch. Then, they mix it into a 250mg fish-gelatin capsule. The idea is that the curcumin needs a fatty carrier, and why not get the benefit of the best carrier, plus some always-useful omega-3s? They are a pretty amazing company….and they have some of the best seafood I’ve ever had. You can see the Curcumin/salmon oil caps at Vitalchoicedotcom if you would like to explore.

          • Hi, Vin,
Thanks! I have one question for you on these tablets….why did you go with tablets and not use an oil (olive, sunflower, even your great fish oils) as a delivery system? I’ve read that the curcumin needs a good oil to break down better. Either oil in a gelcap, or you have to cook it/eat it with an oil to get it where it needs to be.

Oh, and as a note on my previous post….I tried the Vital Choice curcumin and wild salmon oil….I could NOT get past the smell of the spice, or the combo. I cracked one open (as you know I like to do), and the inside smelled lovely. I don’t know why they would smell weird in the bottle (just fish gels), but there it is.

            • Hi PJ – because that makes no scientific sense. Good marketing sense, but no scientific sense. You need a lot more than a few mg of oil to increase the absorption of curcumin. This is why we suggest people take their Turmeric/Curcumin supplements with a big meal, preferably one that contains fat. Curcumin comes the part of India where coconut oil is (or was) liberally used for cooking. If you look a little deeper, you will see that there are some clever absorption techniques that’s been applied to our Curcumin product. I take my 2 pills with my fat-heavy morning meal.

If the bottle of product smelled fishy and the pill content smelled fine, that means there was a leaker in the batch. One (or more) pill was leaking tiny bits fish oil onto the thousands of other pills in the batch and stinking up the bottle.

              • Hi, Vin,
Interesting about the oil/curcumin issue. Oh, and I didn’t say they smelled “fishy.” I checked all the gelcaps just for kicks and they were quite solid. It was a strange, new odd scent that has to do with the combo of curcumin, fish gels, and salmon oil, I think, none of which really smell odd on their own, but together, something happens. I asked the company and they said “that’s how they’re supposed to smell.” lol So, all was well, but if I have to hold my nose, it ain’t gonna work. 🙂 I think I’ll give your nice, dry tablets a try and down some olive oil (on my salad). Thanks! Oh, and the Vital Choice product has NO BioPerine added, and it is certainly not time-released, so there may be debate on how well it is really absorbed. Glad you’ve made a unique alternative to the mass of curcumin products already out. Good to have choices!

                • Thanks, PJ. The thing about this Curcumin formula that I like is that you are getting a ‘metabolite’ of Curcumin. Your body has to take Curcumin thru a series of metabolic conversions before it becomes a molecule of biological benefit. Some of these conversions require that you have specific probiotic bacteria for the conversion. This ‘C3 Reduct’ ingredient is a metabolite that’s ‘pre-converted’ so some of the absorption bottlenecks are removed. This is a very complex and technical concept to easily explain on the label, but this feature is more beneficial than having BioPerine or being time released.

    • Hi Linda – nothing wrong with ArthriD other than that it is not cheap. You can buy high quality Glucosamine and high quality turmeric separately for a fraction of the price.

  14. Hi Vin

Good day…I’m 49 yrs old..My triglicerides is high..its 319..Im taking lipidus 100mg. I am also taking omega 3 fish oil 1000mg once a day…Is it ok to take 2000mg of omega 3 fish oil since my glucose is on borderline (5.8)? ..Is it good for my sons who are 15 and 19 years old to take to help sharpen their memories …Please advice…Thank you.

    • Hi Jean – your fish oil dosage of 1000 mg per day without a healthy diet and exercise plan is not going to budge your triglyceride level. My guess is that of the 1000 mg, only about 300 mg is actual Omega-3. You need about 3000 mg of Omega-3 per day combined with a healthy diet and exercise plan to maintain healthy triglycerides. So instead of taking 10 pills a day, I suggest you find a concentrated fish oil with about 1000 mg of Omega-3 per pill. This way, you’d only have to take 3 pills a day. At this dosage, it is unlikely to affect your glucose. By the way, I am going to guess that your high TG is due to excess sugar, juice, grain consumption. And yes, your sons could take it too.

  15. Could you please direct me to the clinical studies that show which doses of omega 3 are helpful in the treatment of osteoarthritis? I noticed your 2000mg recommendation but wanted to read the studies. Thanks!

  16. Wow! This information was amazing to read. I have had RA since I was a teenager. I wasn’t diagnosed till my mid 20’s. Doctor gave me RA medicine but I just could never remember to take any of those pills! All I would do is pop an Aspirin in my mouth if the Joint Pain become unbearable. A friend told me about Fish Oils helping RA Joint Pain. I gave it a try! Been taking them daily and it has been helping my pain. It’s awesome waking up with no stiffness/pain! But, my question is, are there Bad Side Effects to taking Fish Oil Supplements daily? Is it okay to take Aspirin if I’m taking the Fish Supplements?

    • Hi Zana – there are no known bad side effects to taking fish oil daily, assuming you are taking recommended doses. I also strongly urge that you find a functional or integrative MD in your area. Taking aspirin or other pain killers on a regular basis is a very idea because it will cause stomach issues. In the meantime, I would suggest you try to follow a gluten-free diet – no, I don’t mean buying foods that say ‘gluten-free’ on them, but avoiding all foods made with wheat, grain or wheat flour. You will need to dramatically alter your diet – look into Paleo diet – there are lots of good book on the subject.

  17. hello – can i give omega 3 capsules for my 19 year old daughter? she is perfect in health but for healthy cause can i give her the capsules?

  18. Hi Mr. Kutty,

My Fiancee has been suffering with RA for 22 years. It gives her a lot of pain in her foot, ankle, knee and hips. She has never tried Omega 3 or Glucosamine/Chondroitin before, so I wanted to see if it would be beneficial to start now. I’d like to know if SAMe and MSM would work well for her also….even though I heard they both can be expensive. Thanks

    • Hi Greg – Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune condition. Glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, SAMe are all ingredients for osteoarthritis, not RA. But they are all safe at regular doses, so I don’t think it can hurt. Anti-inflammatory ingredients like Omega-3, Omega-7, turmeric can all help RA but you will need to work with an integrative of functional MD in your area. Omega-3 dosage for RA can be rather high, so it’s best to do so under a doctor’s supervision. What I think will help the most is a drastic change in diet.

I strongly suggest you look into one of the several autoimmune protocol diets:
      http://aiplifestyle.com/what-is-autoimmune-protocol-diet/
      http://paleononpaleo.com/more-paleo/paleo-autoimmune-protocol/
      http://autoimmune-paleo.com/paleo-autoimmune-protocol-print-out-guides/

Whether she will notice a difference with these diets is hard to say, but after 22 years of pain and discomfort, a couple of months on a safe and potentially life-changing diet, I imagine, is worth attempting. Given that no Rx drug or supplement by itself will reverse RA makes the diet option even more compelling.

  19. I have been facing fibromyalgia symptoms ( mainly facial fatigue, all body part stiffness and tenderness, morning stiffness, right side hip joint pain and numbness on right leg) since last 2 year. I am not able to focus on my work and daily activities with joy now. All reports come normal. I haven’t done Omega 3 test yet.
I have read on net that omega 3 pill helpful in this disease. I have started taking nature made(600mg omega 3) pill since last 1 week. but, I want to know that how many month should i take pill to see imporvement? how effective omegavia pills than other over the counter pills? Please help me on this awful situation of life.
    Thanks

    • Hi Nimesh – OmegaVia may help with fibromyalgia a little, but it will not make much of a difference by itself. Fibromyalgia needs several major changes in diet, lifestyle and supplementation.

Other possible changes that might help:
      – Gluten elimination (complete avoidance of all wheat and wheat products)
      – Treatment of yeast (candida) overgrowth – may need antifungals from you doctor and/or the use of caprylic acid supplements
      – Magnesium supplementation
      – Vitamin D and B12 supplementation
      – Diet change to a whole-food or paleo type diet that eliminates all sugar, grains and other foods that cause health issues
      – Iodine supplementation to address thyroid issues
      – Stress reduction using methods like yoga or meditation
      – Healing the gut with probiotics, fermented foods and judicious use of antibiotics.

As you can see, Omega-3 is just one piece of the puzzle. You may be able to find more information here: http://www.dramymyers.com/2013/06/27/a-functional-medicine-approach-to-fibromyalgia/

  20. hi there i am taking atenolol 25mg and valsartan 40mg and bendroflucomide 2.5mg for high blood pressure but i suffer from arthritis in both knees and i wonder is it ok for me to take 1000mg fish oil or 1000mg cod liver oil per day along with this medication i also suffer from pssoriosis and hope to be put on a tablet called methotrexate i would appreciate your views on this thank you
    elizabeth smith

    • Hi Elizabeth – 1000 mg of fish oil is OK, but that will only give you about 300 mg of Omega-3. You need 5 to 10 times as much Omega-3 to notice a drop in blood pressure. Even though even high dose fish oil does not interfere with most drugs, I would talk to your doctor first before you do anything.

  21. Hello Mr. Kutty,

I have Gout and take Allopurinol 300mg capsules twice a day. (Not as I should, I do miss many weeks without taking.) I rarely have flare up but had one two weeks ago while I was on a family vacation probably ate too many foods that I knew I should have not eaten. Anyway it was really painful and lasted the longest since I have been diagnosed with gout 6 yrs. ago. Recently a friend of mine informed me to start taking fish oil as it helped his mom who also has gout and it’s been 3 yrs. since she started to take fish oil Omega 3 and since then she have not had any further gout flares. I did some research and found out it needs to be molecularly distilled fish oil. So I came across Omega via and is planning on placing an order.

The first thing I did when I came across Omega via was to go to the website to conduct further research and I was very happy to find a wealth of information unlike some other brands. Thanks for really having this product and the information fully available to go with it. Any recommendations as to dosage? will two gel caps per day be ok?

    • Hi Omar – there is not much research on Omega-3 and gout, but if you or your friend feel like it helps, then definitely try it. I think one or two capsules a day should be OK. You may also want to reduce sugar and juices.

  22. Hi Vin, I am suffering so badly at the moment, I’m going crazy. I am 75 years old, have been pretty active all my life, with 5 children to look after I’ve needed to be. Apart from when I had a new Aortic valve fitted in 2006. I’ve had Osteoarthritis since about 1986 but never too painful, but now my whoe body hurts. My doctor has sent me for an X ray on my hips, awaiting the results of that, but my fingers and shoulders and knees are the most painful now. I have trouble lieing down for longer than 2 hours because I can’t get up I’m so stiff. my question is, at the moment I’m taking 8 500gr paracetamols, 4 50gr tramadol, 1 glucosamine 500gr and chondroitin 400gr e day. As well as agarlic capsule and cod liver oil capsule. Is it advisable for me to take a fish oil with omega 3 as well. I’m desperate for some relief as I’m caring for my husband who is fighting cancer.

    • Hi Audrey – so sorry to hear about your difficulty. I don’t usually recommend high doses of fish oil to people, but you may want to try taking about 5000 mg of Omega-3 for a couple of weeks. I suggest pharma grade fish oil. The cod liver oil capsule isnt doing much, but no need to stop it. You may want to try 1000 mg of a good turmeric/curcumin extract as well. The goal here is to reduce inflammation. I suspect your diet is highly inflammatory. You may want to talk to a dietitian about an anti-inflammatory diet. Of course, check with your doctor to make sure he/she is OK with all this.

      • Thanks so much for your help, was on Volerol for a long time, now it’s a no no because of the state of my kidneys. Will speak to my doctor as you suggested. Many thanks.

  23. Hi Vin, I have bilateral carpel tunnel, psoriatic arthritis, lichen plantus, and my sister has pudental nerve entrapment/pain. Does anything come to mind that would help either of us? We both experience much pain. Thank you for all you do. Marilyn

    • Hi Marilyn – you must be in quite a bit of discomfort. Sorry to hear that. I assume you are getting professional medical help for all these conditions. If not, you should. From a diet and lifestyle perspective, it never hurts to see if you can benefit from a strict anti-inflammatory diet. I suggest you follow a paleo autoimmune protocol for a couple of months to see if it helps: http://aiplifestyle.com/what-is-autoimmune-protocol-diet/ This is a strict diet and eliminates most common dietary triggers of autoimmune conditions. Some people can notice improvements when you combine a safe, anti-inflammatory diet with supplements like Omega-3 and Curcumin. I have no idea if this will help you, but wouldn’t it be a shame if dietary changes could offer some relief and you didnt fully consider it?

    • Hi Marilyn – very little. We don’t have very clear data on this yet, but my guess is about 300 to 500 mg per day. Going back to pre-agricultural days, we probably consumed low levels of Omega-6 in the spring and summer. More Omega-6 in the Fall to help fatten and slow us down during the winter.

  24. i had a pain in joint, went to check to doctor, said i hve to take care sign of ostoarthities may starts at later, but am in love with exercise i cant stay without it. i hve started fish oil omega. 1 tables 1000 mg, is it ok, kindlya dvise me

  25. Hi
I’ve had my 2 knees operated on my right knee 4 years ago for meniscus tear took about 9 months to be able to exercise again. Did well for 6 months I lived in the gym about 3 hours aday very day I couldn’t get enough well in 5 months I lost total of 63 pounds of course I was eating very healthy. So after I lost all my weight I started having knee issues on my left knee so I worked out even though my knee made grinding noise but I still worked out well 6 months into losing my weight and exercising I started having allot of pain where I couldn’t barely walk so MRI was taken and they found arthritis and they shaved 2 cm of my patella due to all the grinding I did 🙁 anyway so sorry to say I’ve gained most of my weight back because I can’t barely walk in the morning my body feels like I’m 90-100 years old on kidding I’m tasking g baby steps all the way to the bathroom.
After that I need to massage my knee with a massager for 15 min to get my morning started. Since then I’ve been having this heel spur on my other foot very painful so bone spur growing on MRI. I don’t know what to do anymore I’m raking Vicodin for pain with aleeve but nothing seems to be working I have purchased some glucosamine / chondroitin 1000 mg from rite aid : it says helps rebuild cartilage and lubricates joints I take 4 in the morning and 4 at night and then I read that fish oil is good for inflammation but what I have in my house it’s called triple omega
Omega 3-6-9. It contains fish, flaxseed, safflower, and olive oil. It’s made by “nature made ” are these good for me or can you recommend something that will help my joints oh and also with my last MRI taken 1 month ago from my last surgeon that did my left knee he said that I hardly have any cartridge left on my right side and that’s where my pain is at.

Please help me I’m tired of being in pain it has stopped me from enjoying my little ones. I also have a special needs daughter that needs me.
We are planning a trip to Disneyland and I’m planning on staying behind in the hotel, can’t walk that long .

    Thank you
    Marty

    • Hi Marty – I would finish the bottle of Omega-3-6-9 that you already have and then buy a different product that is just Omega-3 without the 6 and 9. Look for a Triple Strength or Pharmaceutical grade fish oil. Take 2000 mg of Omega-3 per day. This should help with some of the inflammation.

  26. i have arthŕìtes pain in my right thumb will the omega3 fish oil reduce the pain can you shipped it to the island of curacao and what will be the cost please email me at this address

    • Hi Winsome – Omega-3 can reduce inflammation if taken at appropriate doses. However, you will have to see if it does anything for you. It may or may not. We do not ship to Curacao.

  27. I now take 3-1000 mg a day with 300 omega 3 in each capsule. I was told I can take them all at once–instead of 1-3 times a day. It is a lot easier as I do sometime forget if I have to take them 3 times a day. I have osteoarthirtis. Your thoughts?

  28. Hi ,

Do you ship out omega 3 here in Philippines, I want to order, how do I pay and how much is the product ? Is there a shipping cost? I have a OA .

Thanks and waiting for your soonest feedback .

    • Hi Susan – no, we do not ship to Philippines. If you can find a comparable product locally, please take 2000-3000 mg Omega-3 per day.

  29. My dr told me to take 4gm of omega 3 fish oil daily. What is the best brand, how much is 4gm and is there a liquid I can take and if so how much is 4gm? 1 tsp, a few drops. Few pills? I am confused!

    • Hi Janet – if you are up for taking liquid fish oil, you should be able to get 2 to 3 grams of Omega-3 per teaspoon. This is a good place to start. If your goal is to get to 4 grams of Omega-3 per day, then a product like OmegaVia may help – 3-4 pills a day get you what you need.

  30. HI
Can I ask a question please I have been taken off Naproxaline because of Kidney Disease stage 3 I did not I have this but the pain i’m in now is really bad I did not know how good the anti=inflammatory was till I stopped these.Would Fish oil help me
    Thanks

    • Hi John – please check with your doctor if this will help you. Omega-3 is a fairly good anti-inflammatory agent. Typically, 2000-3000 mg of Omega-3 per day is needed.

  31. Hello….. my question is what does fish oil do to the lining of your stomach. ..is it similar to the test in water contained in a Styrofoam cup which in 2 mins eats the stryrofoam completely…makes me believe that it would be strong enough to eat holes in the lining of your stomach. ..please reply

    • Hi Chad – fish oil does not do anything to the lining of your stomach. Whatever fish oil does to styrofoam cups, the same can be accomplished with corn oil, soybean oil, peanut oil, butter, margarine, lard, or even gasoline and diesel. If all these oils made holes through our stomach, humans would have been extinct a long time ago.

The styrofoam cup parlor trick is a marketing gimmick. Unless your stomach is made of styrofoam, you have nothing to worry about. Oils are supposed to dissolve styrofoam. That’s basic chemistry.

  32. Thank you for all the recommendation in using this suplement. 33. Hi Vin,
Could you please help me on this.. I am suffering with joint paints. Can you please tell me any brand name which fish oil softgel I can buy which doesn’t smell much.I have taken lot of medicine and B12 injections too but joints pain is not going at all. I don’t see any improvement. Thank you

    • Hi Tina – any high potency (high level of Omega-3 per pill) with enteric coating will reduce smell and burping. If you take antacids or heartburn medications, enteric coating will not work and odor will be an issue.

  34. Our body is equipped with a powerful set of tools for resisting invading microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, and parasites. Unfortunately, these set of tools, or the immune system, sometimes goes awry and attacks our body. These misdirected immune responses are referred to as autoimmunity. In case you are experiencing any abnormalities in your body, go seek autoimmune specialist ASAP.
